Flourescent lightbulbs are they better to use?

PLEASE READ:

ok, I'm doing a science project on ways to make my school campus more Earth-friendly. So, I thought that id we used flourescent light bulbs that it would help, and I've been doing some research and what I've been reading says that they would help b/c they give off less heat and so on, and I'm just looking at other peoples opinions.

I also had to interview people so if you would like to help you can snswer these questions.

1. What do you think is a good way to help conserve energy?

2. How would you use your idea on a school campus?

3. What do you think about florescent light bulbs? Do you think that they would help the environment and how?

4. Since Campbell uses a lot of energy to light the school do you think that florescent light bulbs would be beneficial?

5. Do you think that there would be any problems with florescent light bulbs, and if so what are they?

Flourescent lightbulbs are they better to use?
Honey, most public buildings, schools and offices are already using fluorescent tube lighting, and have been since the 1960s or earlier. Before you embark on this assignment, be sure that your school isn't using them already, or it could prove embarrassing...
Reply:1. What do you think is a good way to help conserve energy?

Yes, fluorescents use a lot less energy

2. How would you use your idea on a school campus?

Using the bulbs in large buildings would reduce energy use for electricity and help with cooling buildings in warm weather.

3. What do you think about florescent light bulbs? Do you think that they would help the environment and how?

In the long term, the bulbs would be a source of savings - they require less energy so are cheaper to run, also many have much longer life span than other bulbs so require less attention by maintenance crews, another source of savings.

5. Do you think that there would be any problems with florescent light bulbs, and if so what are they?

Fluorescents are much more expensive to buy.
Reply:yes it is because it only use 13 walts.
Reply:The answer depends on use. In public spaces and in general use they are much cheaper to use even though the initial equipment cost is higher than incandecent. In computer labs where the screens are crt the strobe effect of flourescent lights might give some people a headache and eye strain. However LCD's and Plasma displays do not have that problem.

They can not in general be used for photographic lighting (except in flash applications) because of the strobe effect.

Because they actually strobe at 60 cycles some people are negatively effected in long term use Incandecent lights do not strobe because the light is produced by a hot filiment that can not cool that quickly.

Another charactersitic of flourescent lights is if they are used where they will be turned on and off often they tend to burn out as quickly as incandecent lights and because they are more expensive this might be a problem.
Reply:Fluorescent bulbs consume less energy, but are also a source of mercury pollution to the environment. My own opinion is that if fluorescent bulbs are the only energy-saving alternative to incandescent bulbs, then we might as well use fluorescent bulbs. The energy savings are huge, and the mercury, while extremely dangerous, is increasingly being recycled these days. Hopefully, not too much will get into the landfills.....
