I am interviewing with a manufacturing company next week. The company manufactures central a/c units. I have about 3 years experience in finance and costing and a Finance Degree from Texas. Personally I do not know that I qualify for the position but they asked to interview me. What can I do in the next week and half to prepare for the questions that they may ask? What kind of questions can I expect? What skills in particular will make me standout and be chosen for this position. Thanks.
What does an assistant controller do in a manufacturing company?
I am currently a controller and I have 17 years of experience. What I have found over my career is that you can rise as far as you want to push, in most cases people will gladly hand over responsibilities. You seem to have a pretty good base of experience for an assistant controller position. This is primarily the "grooming position" for the next controller. Your job duties will not be much more than most accounting managers with the exception that as time goes on you will be doing more controller duties. Expect to be asked about preparing/reviewing financial statements as well as how you would report on specific operational issues (i.e. buy vs rent and other investment activities). What you want to find out is the experience of the controller you will report to. This is important as he or she is the one that will be contributing the most to your growth as an accounting professional.
Be confindent that your exerience has prepared you to meet these new challenges that you are excited to take on.
Have some examples of how you took on a challenge and solved it. Listen not just to the questions they ask but how they ask them. Try to figure out what they want to see the new person be able to take on right away and the assure them that can do it.
